Barry M. Bloom

Barry M. Bloom has been an award-winning sports columnist and reporter for newspapers, magazines and the internet, having written about professional sports since 1976. Before joining the Sportico staff in May 2020, he penned a sports business column for Forbes for two years after covering baseball on and off the field for MLB.com from 2002-18. Along the way he also worked for Bloomberg News and the San Diego Union-Tribune. Bloom has been a voter for the National Baseball Hall of Fame since 1992, and in recent years, he has won eight awards from the San Diego Press Club for columns, news stories and features, including in 2023. His books include biographies of baseball’s Larry Bowa and Tony Gwynn, and he’s currently working on a project about the 1984-era San Diego Padres, plus his own autobiography. Born and raised in New York City, Bloom has a Bachelor’s in English Lit from Fairleigh Dickinson University, a Master’s in Broadcast Communications from San Francisco State University and finished the first year of law school at California Western School of Law in San Diego. He has a beautiful and erudite wife, Alicia, since 1986; two accomplished adult children, Raphael and Joanna; and three beloved grandchildren, Fox, Cortez and Cruz. His life and success would not be complete without all of them.
